Surgical Orthodontics

Dr. Holbert at Holbert Family Orthodontics is experienced in performing a variety of surgical orthodontic procedures. Surgical orthodontics, also known as orthognathic surgery, is used to correct functional problems within the jaw, skeletal discrepancies and moderate to severe dental irregularities. This type of oral surgery moves the bones of the upper or lower jaw to create an ideal bite.

Corrective jaw surgery is recommended for patients with bite and/or jaw problems that orthodontic treatment alone cannot fully fix. In cases where surgical orthodontics is needed, Dr. Holbert will work collaboratively with an oral and maxillofacial surgeon to make sure you have the best treatment outcome possible.

WHEN IS SURGICAL ORTHODONTICS NEEDED?

Some conditions that may require surgical orthodontics include:

  • Birth defects

  • Facial injury or injury to the jaw during growth

  • Severely protruding or receding jaw

  • Inability to properly chew food

  • Open bite

  • Facial dysfunction causing ongoing jaw pain (TMJ) and headaches

  • Excessive wear of the teeth

  • Swallowing problems

  • Asymmetrical facial appearance, skeletal disharmony

Orthognathic surgery is a carefully planned procedure and is only offered to patients whose jaw bone has stopped growing. Typically, jaw growth stops around age 18. There are many factors considered during corrective jaw surgery; however, the primary focuses are to create an ideal bite where the teeth fit together in occlusion and a properly functioning jaw.

COMMON CORRECTIVE JAW SURGERY

One type of corrective jaw surgery, known as maxillomandibular advancement (MMA) is used to address obstructive sleep apnea by repositioning the upper and/or lower jaw so that the tongue and soft tissues do not block the airway during sleep. Jaw surgery is performed under general anesthesia and does require some time to heal. Complete healing of the jaw usually takes approximately 9-12 months. The process of orthognathic surgery usually requires orthodontic treatment before and after surgery.

Holbert Family Orthodontics has experience in working collaboratively with other dental health providers to care for patients with surgical orthodontic needs. After your initial consultation, your treatment options will be discussed and we will partner with you in helping you achieve an optimal functional bite and cosmetic results.
